Hes played by a muscled, winningly earnest Matt Damon, a product of Blomkamps beefed-up $100 million budget ( District 9 was a relative cheapie at $30 million). In the films best scene, Max visits his automated parole officer, a Kubrickian nightmare of a puppet-bot that recites pre-recorded behavior assessments, but is wise enough to detect sarcasm. Elysium sometimes sparks with this kind of brilliant, dark comedy, yet not often enough.
